If you were to take this picture from the same spot today, it would be dominated by the exterior of atria Watford.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we look back at a view from a town centre car park.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “I think this photo was taken from a vantage point at the top of Sutton car park. It looks towards the High Street across Beechen Grove.
“A few landmarks help with orientation. One is the spire of St Mary's Church (left) and the very top of spiral ramp of Church car park (right).
“The car park in the foreground was reached from the Market Place via Meeting Alley.
“Some readers might recall an imposing building at this corner with a large white sign that said ‘Findlaters’.”
