Many of the pubs we visited in the past have sadly pulled their final pints but we continue to remember them fondly.
We asked our readers which pubs they missed the most and why and received dozens of responses from those of you keen to share your memories of where you used to visit for a drink and enjoy a night out with friends.
Here are a selection of your replies, together with pictures from the Watford Observer archive and our friends at Watford Museum.
Colin Parkins said: “Miss the Rat and Parrot, Yates’s wine lodge, The Hogs Head, The Old Westminster, Chicago’s by the pond, The Artichoke, The Salt Hill, O’Neills and the Ice-O-Bar.”
Another reader with fond memories of Ice-O-Bar – “after they closed down The Artichoke” – was Steve Wright. He wrote: “Used to work and DJ in the Artichoke and work in Mirabeaus before moving onto Blake’s in Queens Road which was then Pub on the Corner, I bought the lease hold & named it the Mad George.”
Debbie Clayton has good memories of visiting Bodegas, Hogwash, Bar Risa, Red Bar and Chicago’s, the latter also a favourite of Laura Warwick who also enjoyed going to The Three Horseshoes in Garston, The Beaver, Robert Peel and The Artichoke.
Matt Moloney is another who “definitely misses” the Robert Peel, along with the Vintage Bar in Market Street, while Chris Young was among the readers to share their memories of pubs in the Rickmansworth area.
He said: “The Keystone in Ricky and the Happy Man in Mill End is where us Mill End boys mis-spent our younger days. Top boozers full of characters!”
Plenty of other pubs in the Watford area were also namechecked by our readers, including The Coachmakers, Molloy's, The Game Bird and The One Bell and Shades.
